What does it take to collaborate online?

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the skills needed for effective working online have come to the forefront of many people’s attention. Researcher Alexandra Kolm[1] and colleagues conducted a systematic review of empirical studies of this and found that 6 competence domains emerged for effective virtual teamwork:

  1. ICT competencies
  2. Intercultural and cultural competencies
  3. Communication and language competencies
  4. Self-management and organization competencies
  5. Collaboration competencies
  6. Domain-specific competencies

Competences 2–5 are vital for all teamwork but can be made more complex when this teamwork is online.
But what do each of these competence domains cover? The article gives few details, so we need to look elsewhere for insights. As a starting point for the 3rd one, see our Insight Report on minimising misunderstanding
